Long Time No Blog... One-Month Update

Wow! It's hard to believe we have been home from Hanoi for a little over a month now. How time flies when you're having fun. I was lucky to have my Mom here for 2.5 weeks after we returned. Then Samantha and I (oh... and my niece, Avery) went to Georgia with her when she returned home. We spent a week there introducing Samantha to the rest of the family and letting Avery play with all of her second cousins back there. It was a lot of fun. After that was all over, I had the 'pleasure' of traveling through the airports in Atlanta, Denver and Boise with two little ones. What was I thinking?!? ;-) Seriously although it was very tiring, it worked out just fine.

Samantha is making so much progress and growing so much. She was a little sick when we first got her home, but her last well baby visit proved that she's doing really well. The doctor was extremely impressed with her overall. He was amazed that she had been in an orphanage and praised their skills in care because she was so alert and engaging when he examined her... and also because she was so healthy. We redid all of the major bloodwork, of course, just to make sure she was completely healthy before we started some of her immunizations, and everything is A-OK!!

I started her on baby food when we got home, and she did okay for a little while. She wasn't too cracked up about the highchair, but she's coming around. She has decided, though, that she does NOT like baby food. She wants to pick up things with her hands and feed herself at every meal. She will let me spoon feed her certain things, though, that can't be picked up with her hand. She likes things like edamame, tomatoes, english peas and carrots. Oddly enough, she doesn't like peaches! I'm from Georgia, the peach state; she can't dislike peaches!!! I'll have to give her some fresh ones in the spring instead of the baby jar ones or the canned ones to see if she will come around. wink, wink

Now that she's eating more solid foods, she is sleeping a little better at night. The first two nights I gave her a really solid meal before bed, she didn't feed at all during the night. Last night, though, she did take a bottle around 3:45 am. I'm giving her a watered down version at night, though, to reduce her dependence on feedings in the middle of the night (Thanks, Lao Lao, for the recommendation!).

Speaking of good recommendations... my neighbor gave me another incredible recommendation on sleeping. She said she read in a book that if a child is rubbing her eyes before bedtime and things like that indicating she's tired that it's probably past when she should be going to bed. The book indicated that the child would sleep better and more deeply if put to sleep at an earlier time rather than going down when already super tired. My neighbor suggested I try putting her down to bed early/earlier and see how she will do. It stopped the waking up once and hour for the first two or three hours at bedtime. I was amazed! Let's see if it will continue to work. Whoo Hoo!!!

At 10.5 months, Samantha is almost walking. Yesterday, she walked by herself all the way across the kitchen on the wood floor while barefoot. I was doing something at the kitchen counter and turned around when I heard her footsteps. It was so adorable to see her toddling across the floor all on her own.

She's getting better in the car seat. She finally took a pacifier a few weeks ago. I know there are some of you out there thinking... "Why in the world would you WANT her taking a binky?" But she had started putting her thumb in her mouth kind of as a teething habit when she didn't have something else in her hand to teeth on. I was afraid she would start sucking her thumb, and I can't take that away one day. So when I didn't have a teething toy with me, I'd put a paci in her mouth. She finally took it, and it has helped sleeping and riding in the dreaded car seat. Those are the only two times of the day that I let her have a binky, and she's doing just fine with that.

She's playing fairly well by herself. Of course, she wants me nearby when she does, but if I give her attention throughout the day, she's content to play in the tupperware drawer or with her toys by herself periodically.

She has a loud, husky voice too. We (Grandma and I) like to say that she found her outside voice. A couple of times a day, she will start to make a loud yelling noise. One day Avery yelled back with her, and it started a fun game. They kept doing it for a few minutes, and it was adorable. Now I yell back and forth with her too. I like to think that we are communicating in the only way she knows how... kinda. She does open her mouth and close it making a popping noise when she's hungery for a bottle. It's adorable! So she does communicate other ways. We are also working on sign language. She said ma ma ma ma ma ma when she left the orphanage, and we worked with her to shorten it to Mama. So her first word was Mama!!!. She has started saying "da" lately. I guess her second word with be Dada. Too funny. I can just tell she wants to talk so badly at times.

She definitely has brought a joy to my life that I never could have understood before having her in my life. I have been amazed at the emotions and feelings that I have for her that no one could ever explain to me before to make me understand. It is so amazing to be a mother. Of course, it's challenging too. I'm trying to keep a sense of humor about it as much as possible and laugh when she pees all over my car seat when I'm changing her. Yep! You read that right. Last night on the way home from dinner, I stopped because I forgot to change her diaper before I left. I knew she was going to fall asleep on the way home, and I didn't want to put her to bed with a wet diaper. During the process, my little peanut let it flow all over my back seat. I didn't realize it at first. It wasn't very funny at the time, but by the time I had finished changing her and some of her clothes and started putting her back in the car seat, I was already laughing about it.

That's about it for now. Hope everyone out there is doing well. Here are a few recent pics of Samantha.

Home and Adjusting

As you can tell, we have been out of commission for most of the week. We all have developed a cold/sinus infection, and I ended up with bronchitis on top of all of that. Samantha was the last of us to get the cold and is doing pretty well under the circumstances. She's sleeping in her stroller after a walk, so I thought I would take a minute to blog a little bit. After the bedtime battles we have had, we were not about to pick her up to put her in the crib. This is the first time she has napped that I haven't sprinted into bed for a nap myself. I just got to fold some laundry that I actually finished, and I feel like a human being. :-)

The ride home from Hanoi was somewhat eventful. The Cathay Pacific bassinet was a JOKE. Every time the fasten seatbelt sign came on, they would make you wake the baby to strap her into another JOKE of a seatbelt in your lap. It didn't take me long before I asked them to come get the bassinet and take it away. We ended up having to take turns holding her for most of the 12 hours. That was when I was sick as a dog and Mom was starting to get sick. Joy, joy! LOL Thank for Lord for Katie being there to help us. I truly don't know what I would have done without both of them there to help me.

Samantha is sleeping okay, but she fights going to sleep, and she is still somewhat on Vietnam time. We are encouraging her toward an Idaho sleep schedule. It seems like two steps forward and one step backward. I know we'll get there, though. She is such a pleasant little girl when she's awake. She wakes up with all smiles and entertains herself pretty well throughout the day. We have loved playing with her and watching her explore new things. She LOVED the balloons that Erica got for her at the airport. Avery delivered the balloons, and Samantha couldn't stop looking at them. We have had to hide the balloons periodically because she won't feed or go down for a nap when they are around. She loves them so much!

She's getting used to being strapped in everywhere she goes. After riding in the taxis in Hanoi, she's NOT used to the car seat here at home. She cries almost every time we put her in it, but she's getting better about it. We had to take her to the doctor early last week, and they ran some blood work on her. The doctor was IMPRESSED with her so much. He said he had never seen an adopted child who showed evidence of being so well cared for. He was amazed at how she looked him in the face and had motor skills for her age range. He was also impressed with her overall health. Like I said, we did run some more tests that were already run in Vietnam just to make sure she was truly healthy before beginning to administer immunizations. Of course I'm worried about starting those, but I know they are necessary. We're gonna take it really slowly and only do one immunization at a time. Her doctor is so good about listening to my concerns and working with me on this. I really like his style so far, and that's a good thing, especially for a new mommy.

When we got home we were welcomed by friends and family at the airport. It was so great to introduce Samantha to loved ones. We just wished Brad could have been there too! I miss you, Brad, and can't wait 'til you get home. Brad's squadron (The Bold Tigers) has a welcome tiger that they put at the homes of families with new babies. Katie and Erica arranged to have it at the house when I arrived home for a very special treat! I was in tears when I saw it. It was so thoughtful of them to welcome Samantha home like that. It had balloons attached and a sign to welcome Samantha home. see below... Thanks 391st!!!

Well I'm gonna get some more stuff done around the house while she's sleeping. Sorry for such a delay in blogging. I doubt I'll be blogging daily any more, but I'll update periodically as there's more to share. Here are some photos and a video of the homecoming and a few pics since getting home:

"BYOB" Party

That's a "Bring Your Own Baby" Party. One of the mothers had a great idea to get all of the families together in the breakfast lounge at the hotel tonight to order food and have a little get-together with all of the babies. Families are starting to leave tomorrow, so tonight was the best chance to get everyone together. The babies played very well together, and we ordered some great food that we have discovered during our time here. Here are a few pics from tonight including a big group picture.

Mama D and Mama Cina Out On the Town with our Peeps

We had a great Friday in Hanoi. We did some more shopping and got some cool gifts. Samantha was a trooper as usual. We took a trip back to Cathy Pacific trying to make sure all of our tickets were ready to go for the return change to Monday. The tickets are definitely ready to go, but the second trip to the office wasn't necessary. We had a great lunch at Highlands Coffee again across from the CP office.

Then Katie and I visited the water puppet show while Mom babysat Samantha. We had heard from several families that the babies only enjoyed about 20 minutes of the show that lasts an hour, so we let Samantha off the hook when Mom decided she didn't want to see the show. We thoroughly enjoyed the puppet show. It was really neat the way they used the puppets and threw water around while the traditional Vietnamese music was playing. We have visited a music instrument shop here in Hanoi and have learned a little about how the instruments are used. It made the show even more interesting watching both the puppets and the orchestra. I don't have pics of the show... camera's with Katie tonight. I'll try to post one later.

After the puppet show, we had a spectacular dinner at Bobby Chinn's. It was the BEST meal we have had here in Hanoi. Here are a couple of pictures from dinner tonight. Samantha was such a good girl again. She continues to amaze me. I'm so thankful for her in my life.

That's about it for tonight.

Swimming Fun...

Sorry for such a late post for the day. We took Samantha swimming today for the first time. She loved it! She warmed up to it slowly but did NOT want to leave. We got out of the pool for a minute and decided it might be a little too cold to stay in any longer. If she could have walked, she would have walked right back over to get in. We could tell she did not want to leave. She didn't make much of a fuss, though. She just made an effort to go back. We distracted her and were able to change her to get ready to go. Here are some adorable pictures of her in her duckie swimming suit and towel/cape:

Uncle G, Auntie Angela and Avery will be happy to know that Samantha has learned how to do raspberries:

We have been able to get flight arrangements changes to come home early. We'll be home on Monday night instead of Friday. We have a few more days to enjoy Hanoi before coming home and will continue to post.

The Village People

OK. That's what we've been calling ourselves lately. I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "It takes a village to raise a child." We have been joking that we are the village people the last week and a half. Well, I'm Mama, and my Mom is Village Person #1 while Katie is Village Person #2. It's probably more funny in person, but we've sure had a good time with it.

A lot has happened in the last few days. I'm now feeling better, but Katie is a little under the weather. Mom is on the mend for now too. I went Monday to get Samantha's passport, and it was a great feeling. (I have a photo of it, but it's on the other camera in Katie's room... will post it later.) Of course I cried with happiness. We're almost there!

Samantha and I are bonding very well so far. She has really taken to me and watches me when I cross the room. In fact she doesn't like it too much when I leave the room even just to go to the bathroom in the next room. I just cannot imagine my life without her any more. I have a lot to learn, I'm sure, but I'm enjoying the journey.

I had some time to do some shopping and got Samantha a beautiful oil painting for her room.

We got a stroller for getting around the city. It really helps on the long walks as the Baby Bjorn is killer on the shoulders for extended periods. I have to get stronger so that I can carry her longer in that. She fell asleep today while we were out and about, so we put her in the stroller to nap. It was her first 'good naps' in the stroller. She was a tropper as usual!

Speaking of firsts, we finally found a restaurant with a highchair. We weren't sure how she'd do, but she did just fine. As long as we kept her busy either eating or playing, she was content to sit in it... not bad for the first time. Here's a shot of her chewing on one of her favorite toys... a water bottle.

Now for the greatest news... We offically were approved for her visa today! We are free to go home whenever we'd like at this point. Our appointment at the embassy got moved earlier by one day to our surprise. It went surprisingly quickly at the office, and we were in and out of there in very little time. Loan with PLAN picked up out visas this afternoon and is delivering them to us in the morning. Whoooooo Hoooooo!

The Village People have decided that we are pretty tired and have pretty much done most of the stuff we wanted to do while we were here. So we're going to look into options to come home early. I'm not sure what kind of availability there will be, but we're gonna try.

We're Back...

Hello Again!

We made it back safely from Ha Long Bay and had a nice trip. It was a little bit long being on the bus for 3 hours one way, but Samantha made it alright. She got a little fussy on the way but did pretty well on the way back. We got to stop off at a huge pottery store where they hand make and hand paint pottery. They also make incredible embroidery pieces too. I would have walked around in there for hours, but we only had a quick stop on the way and on the way home. We are thinking about going back and spending a little more time there, but right now we are staying put.

Ha Long Bay was gorgeous, and we definitely don't regret going, but Mom and I are wiped out. The food was amazing, and the tour guides LOVED the babies. The kept holding them while we ate and loving on them. See the picture below of Samantha and her friend, Jack Amidon, with both of the tour guides, Son and Ninh.

Finally after returning Sunday from Ha Long Bay, we were able to attend the mid Autumn Festival. They described it as a festival for the children that happens only once a year. The children go out, eat moon cakes (we bought one but haven't tried it yet) and get new toys. Some of them also dress up a little bit, kind of like Halloween in the US. It's also a little like New Year's Eve. We could not believe all of the motor bikes and people out late last night. I don't know how those kids got up and went to school today.

I have been fighting some kind of sickness and thought I might have the flu tonight. I'm still not feeling well and may have to go to the doctor tomorrow, so I'm gonna keep this short for now. Here are some pics of our trip:

Oh, and check out Katie blog for more details on what's happening in Vietnam. She has a little more energy to blog than I do these last few days, so you might get more details and pics there. I'll try posting the link off to the right side of the blog when I finish this message. Just in case that doesn't work, here's the address: http://www.marthensinmotion.blogspot.com/
